If you've never had a Brazilian wax before, it's normal to have questions — and even a little nervousness. Here's exactly what happens, step by step, so you know what to expect and can walk in feeling confident instead of anxious.
What Is a Brazilian Wax, Exactly?
A Brazilian wax removes all hair from the front, back, and everything in between — as opposed to a bikini wax, which just cleans up the area visible outside of underwear or a swimsuit. Some clients opt to leave a small strip or triangle of hair in the front; that's entirely up to you, and your esthetician will always ask what you'd like before starting.
Before Your Appointment
Let your hair grow in. Hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch long — about three weeks of growth — for the wax to grip properly. If you shave regularly, plan your appointment around this.
Skip the sun. Sun-sensitized skin can't safely be waxed, so avoid tanning for at least 24 hours before you come in.
Take an OTC pain reliever if you're nervous. Something like Tylenol about 30 minutes beforehand can take the edge off if you're worried about sensitivity.
Wear something easy to remove. A dress or loose shorts make the whole process simpler than tight jeans.

What Actually Happens During the Appointment
Here's the part most first-timers worry about most — and it's much more straightforward than you'd think:
- You'll go over your preferences. Your esthetician will ask what style you want (fully bare, a small strip, etc.) and answer any questions before starting.
- You'll undress from the waist down in a private room.
- Your esthetician will guide you through positioning. You'll be asked to move into a few different positions (lying back, knees bent, sometimes on your side) so every area can be reached comfortably. This is completely routine and estheticians do this dozens of times a week — there's no need to feel self-conscious.
- Warm wax is applied in small sections and removed quickly. The sensation is a quick pinch or pull, not a lasting pain, and it gets easier as the appointment goes on.
- The whole service typically takes 15-20 minutes. Tweezers may be used to clean up any remaining stray hairs at the end.
Your esthetician will check in with you throughout, and you can always ask them to pause or slow down. Communication is not only welcome, it's expected — speaking up if something doesn't feel right helps us take better care of you.
Does It Hurt?
Discomfort varies by person, but most first-timers describe it as much more manageable than expected. It's typically most noticeable on the first pass and becomes less intense as the appointment continues. Staying relaxed (easier said than done, we know) and breathing steadily through each pull genuinely helps reduce discomfort.
Immediately After Your Appointment
Your skin will likely be a little pink or sensitive right after — this is completely normal and usually fades within a few hours. To keep your skin happy:
- Wear loose, breathable clothing (skip tight leggings or underwear for the rest of the day)
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, and the gym for 24 hours
- Skip sun exposure — freshly waxed skin burns and marks more easily
- Hold off on touching or picking at the area
Around 48 hours in, you can start gently exfoliating to help prevent ingrown hairs. If you do notice any bumps down the line, here's our full guide to preventing and treating ingrown hairs.
Common First-Timer Questions
Will my waxer judge me? No — genuinely. We see every body type, hair amount, and grooming habit imaginable, every single day. There's no such thing as "too much" or "not groomed enough" before your appointment.
What if I have my period? Most studios can still perform the service if you're comfortable with it — just use a tampon or menstrual cup beforehand and let your esthetician know. Check with us directly if you have questions.
How long will results last? Most people stay smooth for 2-3 weeks. Regular waxing every 4-5 weeks over time also tends to make hair grow back finer and sparser.
Still have questions? Our FAQ page covers the most common ones, or feel free to text the studio directly — we're happy to talk you through anything before you book.
